The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) is dedicated to designing, restoring, and creating wetlands in Illinois and Northwest Indiana to improve water quality, support wildlife habitat, and address climate challenges.Â
As the only nonprofit in the region focused solely on restoring wetland ecosystems, TWI is working to bring back these vital landscapes for the natural services they provide. TWI has restored thousands of acres of wetlands throughout the greater Chicago region, including doing vital urban wetland reclamation work on the South Side and in and around Gary, Indiana in former heavily industrialized areas.
TWI works in partnership across the region, including with farmers and landowners, local corporations, governments, and other nonprofits, community groups, and conservation organizations.

By combining on-the-ground restoration with innovative science and engineering, TWI is creating solutions that can be replicated across the Midwest to protect our water and ecosystems.
