About the 2024 Lowcountry Land Conservation Symposium

Community-Focused Conservation in the Lowcountry

Land conservation in the Lowcountry has always been a team effort. Over the past three decades, the greatest conservation victories involved not only land trusts and advocacy organizations, but also government agencies and most importantly, community involvement. Land conservation is only possible when private landowners and adjacent communities participate, both to physically protect the land, as well as advocate for policies and practices that support land conservation. Without community buy-in there simply is no conservation movement in the Lowcountry.

As the conservation movement continues to evolve its practices to engage new constituencies with diverse perspectives, opportunities arise that push individuals and organizations to consider two questions: why is it important to engage communities meaningfully and authentically in land conservation? And how may we as professional conservationists best approach community-focused land conservation?

At the end of the day, attendees will be able to reflect upon how best to meaningfully engage communities to advance land conservation in the Lowcountry and develop new tools and best practices to enhance community-focused conservation in each organization through peer-to-peer learning. The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation supports land conservation, artistic vitality, and regional collections for the people of the Chicago region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
