Mezcla Media Collective is a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to creating equity and providing resources for women and non-binary filmmakers of color who identify as part of AALANA (African, Arab, Latinx, Asian, Native American). Founded in 2017 by two women of color filmmakers, Mezcla works to level the playing field in Chicago’s vibrant media production scene by confronting systemic exclusion and advancing the work of its members.
As the only organization in Chicago and the Midwest specifically focused on elevating women and non-binary filmmakers of color, Mezcla provides a private membership portal for networking, job opportunities, and events. Their Employer Program helps connect filmmakers with job opportunities, directly addressing the challenges of accessibility and representation in the industry.
Mezcla’s annual Production Retreat, inspired by community feedback, offers aspiring filmmakers an immersive experience in scriptwriting, production, and creative exploration. The retreat provides participants with the skills, resources, and support to develop their own projects—powerful portfolio pieces that demonstrate their talent and potential in a competitive industry.
