Large swaths of the Chicago region west of O'Hare Airport depend for their water supply on groundwater aquifers, including areas with considerable development pressure. Conservation groups have long argued that keeping groundwater supplies sustainable requires protecting natural recharge zones and actively managing development growth, both of which require protection of undeveloped lands.
